Durban Country Club Announces Its New Chairman

12 June 2021 by My Durban
Errol Stewart

With his impressive sporting and business pedigree, the newly appointed Chairman of the Board of Governors for the prestigious Durban Country Club is more than qualified for the job. They’ve scooped an incredible all-rounder for their centenary celebrations in former South African cricketer and rugby union player, Errol Stewart.

Gerard Metzer, General Manager of the Durban Country Club excitedly explains, “With the iconic Club celebrating its 100th birthday in 2022, Errol will be steering the ship at a most exciting time in its history. The Club will certainly benefit from the dynamite combination of his leadership, passion and experience.”

Metzer adds that it would be remiss of him not to acknowledge, with gratitude, the contribution that outgoing Chairman Kamlesh Ranchhod has made over the past eight years. “We are forever indebted to Kamlesh for his efforts in driving the Club forward into its centenary celebrations next year.”

From a sporting perspective, Stewart has excelled in several disciplines; from cricket and rugby to hockey and athletics. When studying Law at the University of Natal, he played as wicket-keeper for the university, as well as for the Natal Dolphins, captaining them in his final season in 2004. He also has another rare distinction to his name – that of being a member of both the Natal cricket and rugby teams that were the respective Currie Cup champions of South Africa in 1995. He retired from rugby in 1997 in order to give cricket his full attention which he eventually retired from in 2004.

Sport flows strongly in Stewart’s blood and, while he may no longer be playing professionally, he still makes time to play cricket, golf, tennis and hockey in his spare time. Not surprisingly, Stewart boasts a single-figure handicap and whenever he gets a gap, you’ll find him driving a ball down one of the fairways of the world-renowned Durban Country Club course.

Not one to rest on his sporting laurels alone, Stewart also has his pilot’s licence and is a founding director of the Westville Boys High School Foundation, yet despite all of these impressive achievements, two of his proudest highlights are his daughters, Caroline and the late Lara.

Errol will serve his tenure as Chairman alongside a new Board made up of the following members: Gary Grant, Susan Reeve, Ian King, Alan Thompson, Tony Turbiglio, Alasdair Muir and General Manager, Gerard Metzer.

Stewart says that he is thrilled to be leading the Board during what is possibly one of the most exciting times in the Club’s history. “I look forward to what lies ahead for the Durban Country Club, and together with my fellow Board members, intend to build on the already firm and unshakeable century-old foundation yet mindful of the need to be contemporary and relevant in today’s world and society we live in.”
