While the National Department of Water and Sanitation has declared KwaZulu-Natal a “drought disaster” area, eThekwini Municipality is also affected by the severe drought condition. The City has welcomed the Department’s declaration and will strengthen efforts to tackle this crisis collectively with all relevant stakeholders.
Hazelmere Dam water level has reduced to below 29% and there has been a minimal rainfall to make a difference.
Since the start of the drought last year, several interventions to mitigate the drought have been implemented. However, very little has been achieved due to the non-cooperation of some residents. The City’s efforts to maintain a continuous water supply have also been hampered by the declining river level of the uThongathi River system. This has affected water supply to residents living in the Northern areas.
The City is intensifying its awareness campaign to encourage residents to use water wisely.
The drought road show will take place today, 04 November 2015 at 09h30 in the Waterloo Community Hall.
The Municipality urges residents to continue reporting illegal water connections and water leaks to the number 080 1313013.
