Dolphins’ tussle with Cobras ends all square:

Durban – The Hollywoodbets Dolphins had to settle for a draw with the Six Gun Grill Cape Cobras in their 4 Day Domestic Series clash that ended at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead on Thursday.

The home side pressed home the advantage they had held for much of the match, giving themselves two full sessions to try and bowl out the Cobras, who had been set a target of 295 to win the match.

The players shook hands shortly after 4:30pm as they settled for a draw with the Cobras on 155/6.

The Dolphins came away with 14.04 points from the clash, and their confidence restored in their red ball game.

“The efforts from the guys has been sensational,” said coach Imran Khan. “I don’t think we could have done anything different today in terms of setting up the game.

“We have played positive cricket right from the get-go. We were very good in the first session of day one and we have carried that momentum throughout the whole game,” he added.

The Dolphins began the morning with urgency as they pursued quick runs in order to get enough time to bowl the Cobras out.

Openers Senuran Muthusamy and SJ Erwee continued where they left off the evening before and with the score on 90 and Erwee on 56 he was the first wicket to fall, well bowled by Aviwe Mgijima.

Muthusamy was the next wicket to fall after registering a second consecutive half century. He was caught trying to go over the top for 56.

Keegan Petersen’s innings was a brisk one and he too made 56 before he was also caught and the Dolphins had 202 when the third wicket fell.

Prenelan Subrayen was promoted up the order but didn’t last long but Ruan de Swardt ended the innings on 32 not out off 30 balls. The Dolphins declared 217 for four, leaving the Cobras 295 runs to win the game in the afternoon session.

A brace from spinner Senuren Muthusamy in two balls rocked the Cobras top order early on in their second innings. Then Prenelan Subrayen accounted for the dangerous Tony De Zorzi and the Dolphins tails were up.

Pieter Malan and Aviwe Mgijima dug in and took the Cobras to 95/3 at tea, 200 runs adrift and in no hurry to chase them down.

Muthusamy grabbed his third after tea when a sharp catch in the slips by Keegan Petersen sent Malan back to the changerooms.

Former Dolphins all rounder Calvin Savage came to the crease to join Mgijima and they successfully saw off the Dolphins quintet of bowlers to reach 143 before Mgijima became Prenelan Subrayen’s second victim, trapped in front playing back.

Muthusamy ended the resolute innings of Savage for 23, and with six down and the Dolphins felt they had a chance of snatching a result, until the umpires light meters brought a close to the contest with the Cobras on 155/6.

Quick Durban KwaZulu-Natal Fact: Durban is one of the most significant repositories for Art-Deco architecture in the world. Art-Deco is an architecture and design style which has its origins in Paris in the first decades of the 20th century. Art-Deco follows an ornamental and lavish style, and is characterised by stepped forms, curves, geometric designs, and motifs. Durban – a developing and emerging city at that time – embraced this radical new design. Art-Deco buildings can be seen all around the city, most notably on the Victoria Embankment, in the City Centre, and on the Berea Ridge.
