Dolphins toil on day two in Maritzburg – Featured Durban Blog

4 March 2018 by Alan

Dolphins toil on day two in Maritzburg:

Pietermaritzburg – The second day of the Sunfoil Series clash between the Hollywoodbets Dolphins and the WSB Cape Cobras at the Pietermaritzburg Oval swung in favour of the visitors, as they take a 41 run lead into Saturday’s third day with three first innings wickets in hand.

Day one was cut short due to poor light in KwaZulu-Natal’s capital on Thursday and the Dolphins begun the second day on 282/9. They added just three runs to their overnight score before number 11 Kerwin Mungroo was LBW to Dane Paterson for a duck.

Dane Paterson was the pick of the Cobras bowlers as he returned with figures of 4/58 while Tshepo Moreki and Dane Piedt picked up two each.

The East Coast side started well with the ball and had the in-form Pieter Malan gone cheaply when was caught by wicket keeper Dane Vilas off the bowling of Rabian Engelbrecht.

Experienced Andrew Puttick then became Engelbrecht’s second victim after he was bowled by the speedster for seven.

The Cobras then gained a slight bit of momentum when Zubayr Hamza and Stiaan van Zyl attempted to steady the ship. Hamza was bowled by off spinner Prenelan Subrayen for 32 and the Dolphins had the visitors 52/3.

Wicket keeper Kyle Verreynne joined Van Zyl and the pair rebuilt the innings nicely for the Cobras. They put on 92 for the fourth wicket before Van Zyl was bowled by Mungroo for 63 from 99 deliveries.

Verreynne continued to remain patient as Aviwe Mgijima joined him in the middle. Another strong partnership ensued with the pair narrowing the deficit between the two sides.

Their 111 run partnership took the Cobras to the brink before Verreynne fell for 88 – LBW to Subrayen.

Mgijima had just gone to fifty before Verreynne fell and his innings continued to flourish after the arrival of Dane Piedt.

The powerful right-hander continued to score fairly freely throughout the latter stages of the day as he dominated the bowling on his way to 95 not out at stumps.

The Cobras finished the second day on 326/7 with a lead of 41 runs in their first innings.
