Dolphins take control on day two against the Lions:
Durban – The Hollywoodbets Dolphins top order batsmen SJ Erwee and debutant Keegan Petersen dug in to post a 188 run partnership that enabled their side to take control on the second day of their 4-Day Domestic Series clash against the Imperial Lions at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium.
At the close the Dolphins had erased all but 69 runs of the visitors first innings lead, after bundling them out for 258 in the morning session, despite a wag in their tail who supported the set Ryan Rickleton.
The Lions landed the first blow in the Dolphins innings when they got Grant Roelofsen out for a duck in the first over, bowled by Beauren Hendricks.
That brought 27 year old Petersen to the crease with SJ Erwee and the pair dug in to thwart the Lions attack and gradually built the foundation for the partnership on the moribund track.
Erwee posted his seventh franchise series century in 134 balls, including 15 fours, in a mixture of patience applications and some exhilarating strokeplay.
Petersen looked well organised and equally patient on his first outing in Dolphins kit as he posted his fifty to bring up the 150 run partnership.
Both survived chances. Petersen was lucky to escape a fumbled stumping chance, while Erwee was dropped by Magala when he was on 40.
Erwee will return to the crease on Wednesday morning on 123 with Petersen eager to add to his 59.
Talking about his knock, Erwee’s seventh franchise ton was an important one for him.
“I know that the world went through a lot over the last seven months with the pandemic but I’ve also been through a lot personally so to get this one was important,” he said.
“It’s very encouraging to get this score in the first game of the season because I’m pleased with the hard work and how it’s paying off again.
“There a lot of good players in their side so to do it against them puts your name in that circle of good players.”
The Dolphins started the morning brightly despite an initial burst from the not-out pair of Temba Bavuma and Ryan Rickelton. Bavuma was the first man out on day two when he advanced down the wicket to Baartman and nicked behind for 60.
It was a productive period for the Dolphins who then ran through the middle order of the Lions with Nicky van den Berg, Dwaine Pretorius and Bjorn Fortuin adding just thirteen to the total between them.
Baartman accounted for Van den Berg while Mungroo picked up the wicket of Pretorius who was well caught by Baartman. Bjorn Fortuin was the victim of a run out at the non-strikers end in a commical mishap.
Sisanda Magala was also the victim of a good catch, this time taken by Khaya Zondo at silly point of Keshav Maharaj.
The Lion’s tail managed to wag as both ten and eleven adding 26 between them along with Ryan Rickelton who went past a half century.
Rickelton was the last man out for 60 when he was well caught by Marques Ackerman at slip off Prenelan Subrayen.
