Dolphins make it three-from-three:
Durban – The Hollywoodbets Dolphins cemented their place at the top of the Betway T20 Challenge with a systematic demolition of the Warriors on Sunday afternoon.
When rain forced the players off the field two overs before the scheduled end of the game the Dolphins top order had taken full control of the match at 128/2 chasing a victory target on 144.
The win, by three runs using the Duckworth Lewis method, secures the Durbanites their third win in succession and leaves them holding all the cards in the tournament, with their spot in the play-offs all but secured.
The victory was built on a superb opening stand of 92 runs between SJ Erwee and Keegan Petersen, the highest partnership of the tournament to date. Erwee fell for an aggressive 52 off 33 balls while Petersen also went on to record his half century.
He was unbeaten on 58, steering the third wicket partnership with David Miller towards their victory target when the match ended prematurely.
Earlier in the day, the Warriors won the toss and decided to bat first, and found themselves under pressure in the powerplay, with skipper Keshav Maharaj starting with the first of his two maiden overs and Robbie Frylinck claiming the scalp of Gihahn Cloete for 5.
Ottniel Baartman revelled in the overcast conditions and slowish surface, getting Lesiba Ngoepe out with his very first delivery en route to an impressive return of 2 for 31 from his four overs.
The Warriors innings was anchored by a gusty 71 run partnership between Jon Jon Smuts and the sides new skipper Sinethemba Qeshile, before Smuts was sent packing by a brilliant run out effected by a bullet-like throw from Baartman from the boundary.
Queshile was unbeaten at the end of their innings on 47, adding runs in a useful sixth wicket stand with Triston Stubbs to get the Warriors to 143/5.

Dolphins power to second T20 victory:
Durban – The Hollywoodbets Dolphins played themselves into a strong position in the Betway T20 Challenge when they comfortably beat the VKB Knights by four wickets on Saturday afternoon.
Set a target of 145 to second their second consecutive win in the tournament, the Durbanites staged a composed run chase to secure the winning runs with eleven balls to spare, spearheaded by an unbeaten 35 from Khaya Zondo.
Zondo found support from David Miller (29) and Robbie Frylinck (24) as they wrapped up the win that sends them to the top of the tournament log after two days of round-robin action.
The foundation for the Dolphins innings came from a 35 run opening partnership between SJ Erwee and Grant Roelofsen, who made the most of being dropped in the third over.
The Free Staters felt they were back in the game when Senuran Muthusamy spooned a reverse sweep to backward point to leave the Dolphins at 46/2.
However the Dolphins middle order thwarted all the tactics from the Knights to try and frustrate the flow of runs, and once the required run rate fell to a run-a-ball the cool heads of the seasoned batsmen at the crease ensured that the result was secure.
Earlier in the day on a clear, hot afternoon at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium, the Dolphins quickly had the Free Staters on the ropes when skipper Keshav Maharaj got the match off to a sensational start by removing Patrick Kruger and Andries Gous in his first over.
Robbie Frylinck tightened the screws when he had Jacques Snyman caught at slip and then sent dangerman Farhaan Behardien back to the change room for 5, leaving the Knights reeling at 21/4.
Skipper Pite van Boljon started righting the listing ship. He found some support from Ferisco Adams, until Ethan Bosch broke the blossoming fifth wicket partnership.
Biljon, who was struggling in the Durban humidity, found solid support from the hard-swinging Migael Pretorius. He rode his luck, surviving being well caught by Senuran Muthusamy when TV footage showed that Kerwin Mongroo had overstepped.
The pair threw caution to the wind and put together 75 vital runs for their unbroken sixth wicket stand that took the Knights to 144/5, 75 runs scored by the exhausted Van Bijon and 38 by Pretorius.
