Dolphins & KZNCU join forces with CANSA at SA v NZ Kingsmead opener:
The 2016/17 cricket season gets underway in the Kingdom of the Zulu on Friday when the opening match of the Sunfoil Test Series between South Africa and New Zealand gets underway at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead in Durban.
On the back of last year’s introduction of international cricket in South Africa in August, Durban – the warmest place to be – is set to host Faf du Plessis’ Standard Bank Proteas for their clash with Kane Williamson’s Blackcaps from 19-23 August.
While the on-field action promises to be red-hot throughout the five day affair, Sunday’s third day is set to see the home of the Sunfoil Dolphins become a sea of blue as host Union, KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union (KZNCU) and Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) team up to raise funds and awareness for men’s cancer.
“Cancer is a very real problem the world over and has touched the lives of so many,” says Sunfoil Dolphins Acting CEO, Rajesh Behari.
“We at the Sunfoil Dolphins and KZNCU are pleased to be able to show our support of CANSA, an extremely worthwhile cause, and ask that all of our fans join us in doing so,” he adds.
As a show of their support, the Standard Bank Proteas will take to the field bearing blue ribbons while all those in attendance on Sunday are asked to wear blue.
“The KZNCU will be donating 50% of Sunday’s ticket sales to CANSA’s projects and we trust the various activations throughout the day will garner even greater financial contributions as well as spread awareness about cancer,” says Behari.
CANSA provides a unique integrated service to the public and all people affected by cancer and is a leading role-player in cancer research with more than R12 million spent annually, of which the scientific findings and knowledge are used to realign health programmes as well as strengthen their watchdog role to the greater benefit of the public.
“As part of our health programmes, our CANSA Care Centres offer a wide range of care and support services to those affected by cancer,” explains CANSA Community Mobiliser, Rinelle Mudray.
“We also supply patient care and support in the form of eleven CANSA Care Homes in the main metropolitan areas for out-of-town cancer patients as well as CANSA-TLC lodging for parents and guardians of children undergoing cancer treatment.
“The CANSA Durban Care Centre relies solely on community support and corporate funding to ensure the sustainability of the organisation and continued provision of services to the greater Durban Region.
“We would like to thank the KZNCU as well as all those who will be attending Sunday’s third day of the Test match in advance for all of the very generous support,” she adds.
An awareness table will provide information regarding cancer and CANSA’s services, receive sign-ups for patient care and support, volunteers, cancer survivors and support groups as well as issue free sunscreen to all patrons.
A sprayathon will also take place in the stadium with participants charged a nominal fee to have their hair sprayed decorative colours to show their support of the Proteas while bandanas will also be for sale.
A private onsite facility will also offer prostate (PSA) screenings with Women’s Health vouchers also being sold here for clinical breast examinations and papsmears.

KZNCU mourns the passing of MC ‘Bhai’ Seedat:
KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union (KZNCU) is saddened to announce that prominent cricket personality MC Seedat, also known as Bhai Seedat, passed away in the early hours of Friday morning.
During the days of racially segregated cricket, Bhai first played for the Natal Indians in the 1954/55 Christopher Trophy – the eighth and second last edition of the bi-annual competition, in Johannesburg before scoring a hundred in the 1956/57 and final edition in Port Elizabeth.
In 1961, when cricket was played along centralized provincial lines for the Dadabhai trophy and Bhai represented KZN at the first of those tournaments in Johannesburg as vice-captain before captaining the side in 1963/64.
“We are saddened by the new of Bhai’s passing and send our sincere condolences to his family and friends,” says KZNCU President, Fa-eez Jaffar.
“During his playing day, Bhai was a very good all-rounder, batting in the middle order and opening the bowling.
“Traveling around a lot due to his work as a rep, Bhai was outstanding in league cricket, initially on the South Coast, then in Central Durban and also in Northern Natal.”
Once hanging up his boots, Seedat went on to become a manager of Natal teams in the 1970s but his greatest contribution came in his role as general factotum.
“In the 70s and 80s, when the NCB was without sponsors and really struggling, if Bhai was around he would do anything to help.
“He was one of those stalwarts that put anything ahead of himself for the benefit of the game and to make others around him comfortable.
“Bhai lived and breathed Natal cricket as a player, a manager and a selector right up until unity, and then as a patron of KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union post-unity.
“He was a very senior yet quiet, unassuming, behind-the-scenes character of cricket in KZN who you could rely on to do anything.
“As a leading figure in Indian cricket in KZN, Bhai was an iconic figure as a role model for a lot of young players.
“He had a great innings in life and we will miss him dearly,” says Jaffar.
