Diwali Vibes Light up the World: From New York to London, and Durban Set to Dazzle With the Ultimate Festival Celebration!

22 October 2024 by My Durban

Johannesburg, October 22, 2024: Diwali Vibes Light Up the World: From New York to London, and Durban Set to Dazzle with the Ultimate Festival Celebration!

It is almost time for the festival of lights ( 31 October  – 1 November 2024,) and the massive global network ( close to two billion) of South Asian descendants worldwide is getting ready to celebrate.

The annual Diwali party in New York is known as the All That Glitters Diwali Ball.

( @allthatglittersball ), kickstarted the Big Apple’s Diwali season with a gathering of the jet set and prominent global celebrities in their most elegant attire. Some guests chose bedazzled wedding lehengas, others wore couture from the collections of Indian Designers, and others brought Bollywood Diwali vibes. @instylemagazine ran a feature on opulent South Asian fashion, from embroidered sarees and beaded lehengas to elegant kurta pyjamas and sherwanis. Anjula Acharia (@anjula_acharia), an entrepreneur who manages actress Priyanka Chopra, organised the party and said, “Diwali is an expression of South Asian culture. It’s our food, it’s our music, it’s our fashion.”

The All That Glitters Diwali Ball is not the only glamorous event for the diaspora of South Asians. London is gearing up for a colossal celebration billed as “ an enchanting festival celebration like no other.” According to the organisers, the Desi Diwali Boat Party Extravaganza is London’s biggest-ever Diwali Bollywood boat party. The Hindu community in the English capital is preparing for an unforgettable evening of vibrant lights, rhythmic beats, and joyous festivities. Well-known author, travel writer, and blogger Anamika Mishra (@anamikawrites) is planning on celebrating Diwali in style. She posted on her Instagram and encouraged guests to “Embrace the spirit of Diwali by wearing your most elegant and colourful traditional attire or go all out with a fusion of modern and traditional fashion.”

Not to be left out, Durban is also planning to celebrate Diwali in style with The South African Hindu Maha Sabha’s Annual Durban Diwali Festival (@southafricanhindumahasabha), which will be held at the Suncoast Parking Site from October 25th to 27th, 2024. This year, attendees can look forward to celebrating Indian culture and heritage, which includes a culinary journey, the latest fashions, and a spectacular fireworks display.

Mr Ashwin Trikamjee, President of the SA Hindu Maha Sabha, says, “ The new and exciting layout promises a better experience. We invite the whole community to join us for a weekend of celebrations for the whole family. We are going to light up Diwali 2024  with Love and Light.”

Diwali is a time to usher in prosperity, celebrate the presence of deities, and commemorate the triumph of good over evil. Those celebrating look forward to festivities and rituals, including gift-giving. Renassh Soman, New Business Developer at The South African Gold Coin Exchange & The Scoin Shop (scoinshop.com), comments, “Diwali Gifts are a tradition that expresses respect and appreciation to close relatives”. The first day of Diwali is Dhanteras, and it’s seen as good luck to gift gold at the beginning of Diwali. Gold plays a role in the mythology of the first day and symbolises hope and overcoming despair.

The South African Gold Coin Exchange & The Scoin Shop will be exhibiting at The South African Hindu Maha Sabha’s Annual Durban Diwali Festival. “ Having been in business for 25 years, The Scoin Shop is a trusted name in local gold and bullion buying circles. This year, we are delighted to showcase at the Durban Diwali Festival and launch our Diwali gold gift selection, including bespoke packaging allowing gifts to be beautifully presented,” added Soman.

Giift giving for Diwali is a beautiful tradition that adds depth and warmth to the festival. It transcends material value and emphasises the importance of relationships, love, and goodwill. So, as you prepare to celebrate Diwali, remember that the gift you give is not just an object; it’s representative of your affection and a wish for happiness in the lives of those you care about. A well-known Hindu proverb sums it up, “They who give have all things; they who withhold have nothing.”
