As South Africa’s fashion industry continues to unlock opportunities for self-employment, job creation and drive creative economic growth, the Class of 2026 Durban Fashion Fair (DFF) Mentorship Programme officially commenced today, with an induction session at Fezile Fashion Skills Academy in Bram Fischer, setting the tone for a new wave of emerging designers poised to enter the market.
This 10-month programme follows a rigorous and highly competitive selection process that identified 25 promising designers ready to transition their creativity into viable, sustainable businesses. It is designed to bridge the gap between talent and commercial success, focusing on business development, brand positioning and market access.
Mentees will attend structured classes three times a week, gaining practical and theoretical insights across the fashion value chain.
Founder of the Academy, Fezile Mdletshe, appointed by eThekwini Municipality to lead the programme, highlighted the discipline required to succeed.
“Discipline and deliverance will take you far. This programme is about refining your craft, but more importantly, building a business that can compete and thrive,” she said.
Mdletshe also outlined the curriculum, noting that the core focus is to shape creative talent into sustainable enterprises.
As part of their development journey, designers will conceptualise and produce seven looks, refined into five standout garments to be showcased at the annual DFF runway in September.
Training continues thereafter to further refine participants and support access to markets.
Participants expressed optimism about the opportunity.

City’s Chairperson of the Economic Development and Planning Committee, Councillor Thembo Ntuli, said:
“Through the DFF Mentorship Programme, we are investing in talent that will define future trends and contribute to economic growth through entrepreneurship and job creation.”
