Decorex Durban reveals fresh features for 2018 show

6 March 2018 by My Durban

Decorex Durban reveals fresh features for 2018 show:

While international trends and styles filter throughout the décor, design and lifestyle industries, it’s always interesting to witness how these global preferences are interpreted at a local level. Decorex Durban – sponsored by Plascon – promises a strong design-focused exhibition for 2018 with 15 leading designers collaborating with industry experts to curate on-trend spaces that encapsulate the #rhythmoflife theme. Visitors to Decorex Durban, taking place at the Durban Exhibition Centre from 21 to 25 March, will get to experience these décor and design masterpieces in a number of vibrant new features that add some local flavour to global trends.

Setting the tone

Colour will splash across to the Decorex Designer Spotlight feature as Paige Waplington, owner of Redesign Interiors and CEO of the African Institute of Interior Design, crafts a unique space, reminiscent of a hotel room. Paige and her team will create some bespoke furniture pieces in this standout installation.

In the home

Step into the @home Trend Home presented by Decorex – curated by Creative Director of Decorex, Anita Bloom – to view how @home’s stunning range of furniture and décor, extends this year’s trends. Leading kitchen and bathroom suppliers will be given a blank slate to fit and fashion stylish rooms showcasing the latest in appliances and fittings.

Visitors will get a unique insight into the team behind the show at the imaginative #withlovefromDecorex feature. This discerning display will showcase 18 furniture and décor pieces from this year’s trendy @home collection, each representing an aspect of the 18 dynamic personalities that make up the Decorex team.

Three local designers – including Durban’s Mi Afrika with two still to be named – will curate three vastly different room settings in The Bedroom Project. Take in the trendy apartment bedroom before immersing yourself in the serenity of the bush lodge room setting with the final space exposing you to an elegant hotel room – all of which are connected through the Decorex #rhythmoflife theme.

Taking a much more central role in the home, the bathroom is given some deserved attention at this year’s Bathroom Trends Project. Designers will collaborate with top-end bathroom suppliers to select their preferred accessories, fittings, fixtures and colour palette for three sophisticated bathroom settings that reflect local styles and trends. Each bathroom will correlate with the Bedroom Project’s apartment, bush lodge and hotel installations.

Every age brings with it unique needs and preferences which is why the Rooms to Grow feature will draw worthwhile attention from those in parenting roles. Take your first steps into the softened, muted tones of the Baby Room, transitioning into the more energised Toddler Room with its stimulating colours and space. The Tween room acknowledges the need for identity and exploration while the Teen bedroom provides a comforting yet inspiring environment for the adolescent. All four designers will be guided by #rhythmoflife theme for each installation.

Time to accessorise

Senses will be elevated in the Design and Textile Elements where decorators and interior designers will curate an interior room setting to display their signature design styles. They will get the chance to incorporate the latest iconic designs which have been fashioned into this year’s stunning fabric collection.

Lights can make or break any room which is why suppliers will relish the opportunity to display the best illumination for every space in the Lighting Elements – brought to you by Light+Living. This enlightening feature will showcase the latest ranges of innovative, on-trend lighting solutions for any space.

Nature décor products – including marble, cork, glass, brass, metallics, bamboo, wood and ceramics – will find their place in the Natural Elements feature sponsored by Neolith. Expect a stunning fusion of the latest design trends grounded by tactile natural products from top design houses.

Get outdoors

The outdoors forms an extension of the home at this year’s verdant Landscaping Feature. This contemporary garden installation by Spade Design expresses the playful intertwining of urban modernism with the primal jungle using the latest calming colours and natural materials.

You will be further encouraged to spend more time outdoors once you’ve witnessed the high-technology capabilities of EGO Power gardening and landscape at the EGO Garden of the Future, brought to you by Smith Power Equipment. Launched for the first time in South Africa – the power of EGO’s environmentally and user-friendly products will be displayed, opening up a new world of silent gardening that requires no petrol. To celebrate the official introduction of these clean, green products to the South African market, EGO power will also be hosting a trade launch event at their Decorex Durban stand.

And no garden is complete without this on-trend feature. Eykon, Dreamery, MSQ Interior Design and Jennifer Jones Interiors will be transforming basic sheds into glamorous She Sheds – a female version of the ‘man cave’. The designers have been tasked with incorporating a touch of pink into each shed which will form a safe haven for one of four chosen celebrities. These include Ukhozi FM radio presenter, Vukile Mckenzie; renowned actress Jailoshini Naidoo; and famed South African actress and television presenter, Kajal Bagwandeen. Decorex SA has partnered with breast cancer awareness NGO, PinkDrive, for this fundraising feature.

Take a bite

The two-day Pop Up Market – brought to life by The Creativity Lab – will introduce you to a range of artisanal crafts suited to the 2018 interior design and décor trends while providing a relaxed environment for some of Durban’s finest cuisine supplied by local eateries to be sampled.

Fusing the culinary experience of some of Durban’s top restauranteurs is the not-to-be-missed Roast Co. This rotisserie on wheels will serve a succulent variety of the company’s signature meats including slow-roasted lamb, marinated chickens, pulled pork and brisket.

Happiness can be found at The Rhythm Eatery, styled by The Creativity Lab, where some of the best local food trucks will satisfy a range of divergent tastes. You will get a chance to sit down, relax and enjoy your meal in a beautifully curated #rhythmoflife space.

Take a sip

Professional mixologists will expertly guide you through the exciting world of craft gin at this year’s deliciously refreshing feature, The Secret Gin Bar. Sample a number of delectable gin cocktails prepared from a selection of local and international gins.

If wine is more to your liking then here’s your chance to sip some of the best South African and international wines available at The Tasting Room Wine Bar. Take the time to enjoy the myriad of subtle bouquets on offer, all in a crafted space complete with custom-made wood and steel furniture by Yard Seventeen, draped in gorgeous fabrics from Caversham Textiles. Live music by DJ Lau Lau will enhance your wine-tasting experience on the weekend.
