MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Nomusa Dube–Ncube and EThekwini Mayor James Nxumalo visited three schools today, 13 January 2015 to monitor their readiness for the 2016 academic year.
Visiting the Dumisani Makhaye and Phakathi High Schools and Insizwakazi Primary School, all West of Durban, Mayor Nxumalo called on members of the community and parents to play a meaningful role in protecting the infrastructure in schools.
“When we visited these three schools we noted with concern that vandalism and theft of school materials was top on the list of concerns,” Nxumalo said.
He said parents needed to be involved in their children’s education to ensure that the quality of education improved. “The Umlazi District has been producing good results. They have made eThekwini Municipality and the Province of KwaZulu –Natal very proud,” Nxumalo added.
Nxumalo said he was happy that all three schools visited today had begun classes for the new school year and that textbooks had also been delivered. “Every year we meet as government from various spheres, including the Department of Education, to ensure that schools are ready for learning and teaching from day one. We are happy that this was the case with the schools we visited,” he said.
MEC Dube-Ncube said through Operation Sukuma Sakhe Programme they were able to keep in regular contact with schools. “We also visit schools quarterly because we don’t want to create a gap between us and the schools.”
Dube-Ncube said even though the schools visited were still dealing with the late registration of pupils, they were happy with the state of readiness of the schools.
