Coastal Conquerors crowned Cubs Week champions – Featured Durban Blog

Coastal Conquerors crowned Cubs Week champions:

Durban – The newly formed Coastal Conquerors, a team of players from KZN Coastal and KZN Inland, were crowned CSA Cubs Week champions after they beat the Eastern Warriors in the final match in Stellenbosch on Friday.

After losing their first game of the tournament against the Western Legends, the team bounced back to win their next three matches to set up a final with the Warriors from the Eastern Cape.

The men from the Eastern Cape batted first and amassed a formidable 297 for eight in their fifty overs with contributions throughout the innings. From a Conquerors perspective Oyama Ntshona was the pick of the bowlers picking up three for 38.

In a final, scoreboard pressure is a real threat to any chase however the men from KwaZulu-Natal put on a masterclass chase that saw them over the line in 48 overs with six wickets intact.

Despite losing the openers fairly early in the chase there were contributions from Banele Cele (46), Ntandoyenkosi Zuma (47) and captain Nathan Trevethan (46*) to steady the ship after the early misfortune.

The day however belonged to Chad Laylock. The middle order batsman smashed 111 not out off just 78 balls to guide the side to a memorable win. He struck eleven fours and five sixes on his way to a match-winning innings.

For the head coach of the team Yusuf Abdullah he asked the side to band together after their opening day loss and they did just that.

“I just told the boys that if they want to be successful they are going to have to play as one,” Abdullah said.

“We saw throughout the week that we had different players stepping up on different days to get us over the line which is exactly what you want in a team environment.

“I expected the quality of the cricket to be similar to the Coke Week but I was very impressed by all the sides there and I think cricket is in a good place in South Africa.”

The team was made up of seven players from KZN Inland and six players from KZN Coastal so for Abdullah is was a good mix.

“It was really positive to see the boys coming together and playing good cricket and it shows that there is a lot of young talent in the province which bodes well for the future.

“We saw a number of players show that they are making good strides and will hopefully be in the professional mix in the not too distant future,” Abdullah added.
