The Municipality will form a crack team of officials to come up with strategies on how to deal with challenges of illegal dumping and other unlawful acts affecting various areas.
Unathorised activities, such as business licensing, businesses conducted in residential areas, unapproved building plans and general vandalism on infrastructure at Shallcross Sport Stadium were identified during the visit to Chatsworth by senior Municipal officials on Monday.
The City Manager, Sibusiso Sithole said the City will be putting together a team, which will specifically deal with such issues, since it was clear that there is a lot of work to be done in this area. He implored Municipal officials to conduct inspection in their areas to prevent inefficiencies and act promptly to address challenges emanating from inspection.
“We want local people to come up with solutions on how to tackle these challenges and they must commit themselves to work with us. Chatsworth is infested by illegal dumping in some of the areas. The illegal dumping bylaws must be reviewed and the fines for illegal dumping must be hefty in order to prevent the scourge,” said Sithole.
“We are engaging the community because we want to minimise illegal dumping, which is on the rise at Sunset Avenue, Bangladesh Market and Bottlebrush informal settlement,” he said.
He said land invasion should not be happening at this rate. Vacant land should be put on sale or must be used for Municipal projects.
Umlazi and Lamontville are some of the areas which will be visited to check challenges that affect service delivery and address those through concerted efforts of various Municipal Units and Departments.
