Chatsworth House Fire Claims Life

16 August 2026 by My Durban

A house fire in Chatsworth in the early hours of Friday morning claimed the life of one occupant, while a second was taken to hospital for treatment.

eThekwini Municipality’s Fire and Emergency Services responded to reports of a house fire at approximately 05h30 in Montford, Chatsworth.

On arrival firefighters were met with a fully developed fire, with both the ground and first floors of the double-storey residence engulfed in flames. Thick smoke and intense heat throughout the house created extremely dangerous conditions for occupants and emergency responders.

Despite the severity of the fire, one occupant escaped the burning home after sustaining smoke inhalation injuries.

The occupant was treated on scene before being transported to hospital for further medical care.

A male occupant was found inside the residence with extensive burn injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene.

Firefighters worked swiftly to contain the fire and prevent further damage, extinguishing it approximately 20 minutes after arriving on scene.

Emergency medical personnel and members of the South African Police Service were also in attendance.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined.

Fire Safety Services is conducting an investigation to determine the origin and cause of the incident.

The Municipality extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and wishes the injured resident a speedy recovery.

The Municipality appeals to residents to prioritise fire safety, as simple precautions can prevent loss of life.
