The Cell C Sharks, fresh from a week two bye, will host the Waratahs in our first Vodacom Super Rugby home match of the season at KINGS PARK this Saturday.
The Waratahs pressured the Stormers into a late mistake in their first round match in Sydney on Saturday to score a last gasp try to wrestle a 34-27 victory in their opening match of the tournament and the Sydney-based team will come to Durban looking to inflict similar pain on the Cell C Sharks.
With the Waratahs’ morale-boosting first round win against the Stormers, Cell C Sharks forward coach Jaco Pienaar explained out that, “They showed great fighting spirit, they won their game in extra time by never giving up and playing until the final whistle. They’re a good team with some great individuals. There’s lots of quality there and they’ll be looking to put in a good showing this season.”
The Waratahs are seeking redemption for a 2017 season that did not go all their way. They finished third last on the log with four wins from 15 starts, this after winning the tournament in 2014.
Scrums will be keenly contested and highly scrutinised when the two teams meet and Pienaar, under whose direction the team will look to perform at the vital set-piece, explained that: “Scrumming-wise, initially the Waratahs were very good and the Stormers only got the better of them later in the game. But it’s something they will work hard on ahead of their game against us.”
As far as our scrumming goes, Pienaar admitted that, “We’ve been working hard on that aspect of our game. We went through the video afterwards and identified a few things that we need to tweak and work on and it’s definitely improving, we expect a much better performance this weekend.”
With Thomas du Toit now featuring at tighthead prop, the assistant coach explained that it’s about patience and game time. “It’s all about getting time in the saddle and doing the job regularly; he will get better as he plays more in the position as the season progresses.”
He admitted that the Cell C Sharks forwards have set themselves high standards and as part of a team, know that they can add massive value if they do their jobs well. “We need to create the platform for our exciting backs to attack off, so it’s important that we not only do our job, but do it well to create that front-foot ball for them.”
Pack domination is vital he added. “We want to create the platform for the backs and then be physical, be direct, be the pack we can be and know we are.”
“The guys are excited, it’s our first home game and after a few days break, the energy is at a great level.”
