CDC teams up with health organisations to create awareness for cancer
IN support of Cancer Awareness Month, the Coega Development Corporation (CDC) in partnership with CANSA Eastern Cape and the Department of Social Development will host a workshop to educate women on the importance of regular breast checks at the Palmerton Women Empowerment Centre in Lusikisiki.
CANSA EC will educate the women on the importance of early detection of the disease and also inform them of the benefits of following a healthy lifestyle. The workshops will be held on Tuesday, 27 October 2015 at the Palmerton Women Empowerment Centre in Lusikisiki.
According to the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), 1 in 33 women is at risk of developing breast cancer in South Africa.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) reported that 8.2 million people died of cancer in 2012. About 47,000 of these deaths occurred in South Africa, where cancers of the lung, oesophagus, breast and prostate are most common.
“It is important that we invest in our health and we can do this by learning more about our own bodies and living a healthier lifestyle. One way of doing this is to do monthly self-examinations of the breasts,” said Thandi Rayi, CDC Head of Corporate Social Investment (CSI).
The Palmerton Centre accommodates female entrepreneurs from the Eastern Cape. These women are involved in a number of skills development initiatives ranging from catering to sewing and knitting, pottery and farming among others.
In future, the CDC in partnership with the Department of Social Development will also provide the women at the centre with life skills training such as driving skills, health awareness sessions, SMME business skills and legal rights for women.
“The CDC’s CSI unit has played a major role in positively impacting the lives of communities from disadvantaged areas in South Africa. During the 2014/15 financial year the CDC contributed more than R13-million to CSI projects,” said Dr Ayanda Vilakazi, CDC Head of Marketing and Communications.
