Castle Premier League going to the wire:
Durban – The 2021/22 Castle Premier League club season in Durban could potentially go down to the final round of fixtures as Empangeni’s King Cetshwayo Cricket District (KCCD) and Clares Cricket Club fight it out of the overall honours.
In what was a season defining match, KCCD and Clares faced off last weekend with the North Coast team pulling off a crucial 16 run win to give them a one point advantage at the top of the log.
Jason Redinger was the stand out performer scoring 113 and taking 5/22 as they defended 216 to leapfrog Clares to the top of the log.
The win means that KCCD lead the way going into the final two rounds of the season, however they have a slight advantage over Clares with one game in hand. Clares have one match left against Amanzimtoti Cricket Club this coming weekend.
For KCCD they have two remaining matches with an away match against Rhythm DHS Old Boys on Sunday and then a home match against Crusaders next weekend to finish off the competition. If they win this weekend they will be a big step closer to the title.
Currently in third place but definitely not out of the race is Hollywoodbets Crusaders. With two matches left in the league season should they beat Southern Natal this weekend then the final match of the season at Addison Park against KCCD will be a final.
The Castle Promotion A League has been completed and Chatsworth United have claimed the title having won ten of their eleven matches this season including ten bonus point victories. They finished nine points clear of East Coast Cricket Club in second.
In the Castle Promotion B League Tongaat Cricket Club took home the overall honours having won eight of their ten matches in the season and they ended just three points ahead of Lindelani Cricket Club in second with Phoenix Cricket Club in third.
The eight team Castle Women’s Premier League has been won by Hollywoodbets Chatsworth Sporting who have won eleven, lost one and had one no result so far in their campaign with one match left this weekend.
They face third place Rhythm DHS Old Boys in their final game and currently sit with an unassailable eleven point lead at the top of the log.
With one round left in the Castle Promotion Women’s League it’s Umlazi Cricket Club that hold a six point lead at the top of the log.
Their six point gap over DUT Cricket Club means that they will be crowned champions this weekend after their match against Chesterville.
“To see all our leagues being hard-fought right to the end is brilliant for us to see and it shows that club cricket is still very much alive in KwaZulu-Natal,” CEO of KZN Cricket Heinrich Strydom said.
“In the new structure of domestic cricket in the country, our Castle Premier League now has a vital role to play in feeding the KZN Cricket pipeline and seeing the performances by the player’s week in and week out we are encouraged by the standard of club cricket here.
“We wish all the teams the very best for the final round of fixtures and congratulations to the teams that have already won their respective leagues.”
