The IFP in KZN says that it is deeply shocked and saddened by Tuesday’s shopping mall tragedy in Tongaat, north of Durban.
‘This is a grave indictment on the enforcement of the law by the EThekwini City Council. Their inefficiency and maladministration has directly contributed to this senseless tragedy,’ said Hon. Blessed Gwala, provincial leader of the IFP.
The beleaguered EThekwini Municipality must take responsibility for the loss of innocent lives and the injuries of scores of others. This disaster is grim testimony of EThekwini’s failure to enforce by-laws and correct processes and procedures.
The Deputy Mayor’s assertion that the council had obtained a court order to halt the building is cold comfort in the face of such heart-wrenching devastation. We are however comforted by the knowledge that this sub-standard building was not opened to the public at the time of the tragedy. Had this been the case, then this tragedy would have been magnified by greater loss of lives.
The IFP acknowledges the sterling work done by the police’s search and rescue team and other emergency services in the aftermath of this disaster. The party records its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and pray for a speedy and complete recovery for those injured.
“We, the IFP call for a full investigation with a view to sending out a clear message that this kind of inefficiency, shoddy workmanship and corruption has no place in our democratic society,” concluded Gwala.
