Business Empowerment Workshop

16 April 2026 by My Durban

In a continued effort to stimulate local economic growth and support small enterprises, eThekwini Municipality’s Business Licensing Division today hosted a successful Business Empowerment Workshop in Ward 92, Clermont.

The workshop aimed to equip entrepreneurs with essential knowledge on business compliance and development.

Key compliance requirements, including business licensing, town planning regulations, environmental health standards, fire safety, building regulations, and informal trading formed the core of the discussions.

Representatives from various Municipal directorates were present to provide detailed guidance and support, ensuring that businesses gain a clear understanding of the legal frameworks required to operate successfully.

The programme also featured contributions from SMME support services and the Department of Labour, focusing on skills development, training opportunities, and potential employment pathways.

These engagements were designed to address common challenges faced by small businesses while unlocking opportunities for growth and long-term sustainability.

Siphiwe Zwane, Chief Licensing Inspector within the Economic Development Directorate: Business Licensing, highlighted the importance of the initiative, particularly in previously disadvantaged communities.

“The purpose of this workshop was to empower the community with knowledge and resources that will enable them to actively participate in the economy while remaining compliant,” said Zwane.

The session was well attended, with strong participation from local entrepreneurs.

Interactive question-and-answer sessions enabled meaningful engagement, allowing attendees to gain clarity on processes and available support systems.

Community leadership, including the ward councillor and committee members, welcomed the initiative and expressed appreciation for its positive impact.

The Municipality has committed to rolling out similar programmes in other communities to further strengthen local economic development.
