At 21h00, Wednesday, 01st April, NSRI Durban duty crew were activated following reports from Police Search and Rescue that they were responding to North Beach Pier where according to eye-witnesses a man was in the surf line at North beach Pier.
NSRI Durban duty crew launched the sea rescue craft MEGAN II and Metro Police and Netcare 911 ambulance services responded to join Police Search and Rescue on the scene.
On arrival on the scene a search commenced and the body of an unidentified adult male was located and recovered from the surf and was brought onto the beach and the man was confirmed to be deceased by paramedics.
It is unknown what led to the man being in the water.
Police have opened an inquest docket.
