EThekwini Municipality is reinforcing its commitment to delivering efficient, people-centred services by investing in social cohesion within its workforce.
This recognises that a united, inclusive and motivated employee base is essential to serving over four million residents with excellence.
This strategic focus took centre stage today, Monday, 08 June, at the Durban International Convention Centre (ICC), where municipal leadership, employees, and key stakeholders convened for a Social Cohesion Seminar held under the theme “Embracing Unity in Our Diversity.”
The engagement aimed to strengthen collaboration and build a high-performing institution that delivers quality services to the people of eThekwini.
Led by the Municipality’s Chairperson of Corporate and Governance, Councillor Nkosenhle Madlala, the seminar underscored the direct link between workplace unity and improved service delivery outcomes.
As one of the largest public sector employers in South Africa, eThekwini Municipality recognises that the quality of its services is driven by the strength, cohesion, and wellbeing of its people.
Councillor Madlala emphasised that social cohesion is not merely an internal initiative, but a strategic driver of organisational performance and service excellence.
“We are a collective of diverse individuals united by a common purpose, to serve the people of this city with integrity, excellence, and commitment. When we strengthen unity within our workforce, we strengthen our ability to deliver quality services to our residents,” he said.
He further highlighted that social cohesion enhances how employees collaborate, resolve challenges, and innovate, all critical elements in responding effectively to service delivery demands across the city.
A cohesive workforce enables better coordination, improved productivity, and enhanced responsiveness to the needs of communities, ultimately translating into a more efficient and impactful service delivery experience for residents.
The seminar also reaffirmed the Municipality’s commitment to building an inclusive organisational culture.
By promoting mutual respect, employee wellbeing, and a sense of belonging, the City is cultivating an environment where employees are empowered to perform at their highest level.
This, in turn, strengthens efficiency, accountability, and service responsiveness ensuring that residents receive reliable, high-quality municipal services.
Acting Director of the Human Resources Directorate, Elliot Makhaye, highlighted the importance of fostering platforms that encourage engagement and collaboration among employees, noting the direct benefit to communities.
“A workplace that is inclusive and united enables employees to perform at their best, and this positively impacts how services are delivered to our communities,” said Makhaye.
The seminar featured a panel of experts from various municipal directorates, who shared practical strategies to advance inclusion, strengthen teamwork, and embed social cohesion across the organisation.
Through such initiatives, eThekwini Municipality continues to position itself as an institution committed to building a capable, united workforce that delivers meaningful results for communities.
