AutoTrader Becomes the First Automotive Marketplace in South Africa to Integrate Listings With ChatGPT

10 June 2026 by My Durban

AutoTrader has become the first automotive marketplace in South Africa to integrate its vehicle listings with ChatGPT, marking a significant step forward in the evolution of automotive search and digital vehicle discovery.

AutoTrader has become the first automotive marketplace in South Africa to integrate its vehicle listings with ChatGPT, marking a significant step forward in the evolution of automotive search and digital vehicle discovery.

The new integration, named AutoTraderGPT, enables consumers to search for vehicles using natural, conversational language directly within ChatGPT, creating another seamless way to discover AutoTrader listings. Users can simply describe the type of vehicle that they are looking for, such as “@AutoTraderSA Show me used SUVs under R350,000 in KwaZulu-Natal” or “Find me a low-mileage Ford Ranger from a dealer in Gauteng”, and ChatGPT can return relevant listings as part of the conversation.

This innovation positions AutoTrader at the forefront of AI-driven automotive retail, reinforcing its role as a pioneering, technology-led marketplace committed to improving the experience for both car buyers and dealers.

The integration introduces conversational AI to AutoTrader’s listings for car buyers, built in partnership with OpenAI and accessible directly through ChatGPT. Available to all ChatGPT users, the app allows consumers to call on AutoTrader within their prompts and complete the vehicle discovery process in a conversational environment, at a time when more buyers are beginning their search journeys through AI-powered tools.

Crucially, the assistant is informed by AutoTrader’s proprietary live market data and vehicle intelligence, giving it access to insights that generic AI models do not have on their own. This strengthens the relevance and accuracy of the search experience, allowing consumers to explore vehicles more naturally and intuitively while still drawing on the depth of AutoTrader’s marketplace data.

By complementing existing search filters with an AI-powered search experience, AutoTrader is making it easier for consumers to find vehicles that suit their needs, while helping dealers extend the reach and visibility of their listings to an audience that is increasingly engaging with AI as part of the buying journey.

“This is an important milestone in our innovation journey,” said George Mienie, CEO of AutoTrader. “We have consistently invested in tools and technologies that improve how consumers find vehicles and how dealers connect with ready-to-buy audiences. With AutoTrader Intelligence, we introduced smarter, data-led insights into the market. By integrating ChatGPT, we are taking that vision further and enabling a more natural, accessible and seamless way for South Africans to discover vehicles.”

The launch builds on the company’s broader commitment to innovation through AutoTrader Intelligence, which has helped strengthen the brand’s position as a forward-thinking player in the automotive marketplace. With customer-facing tools such as AI-powered Vehicle Highlights and personalised recommendations already enhancing the car buying journey, the ChatGPT integration represents the next step in that journey. This combines marketplace expertise with the growing power of AI to create more relevant and responsive consumer experiences.

For consumers, the value lies in simplicity and convenience. The integration offers a conversational way to explore relevant vehicle listings, allowing users to refine what they are looking for naturally and intuitively. For dealers, it opens up a new channel through which their listings can be discovered by high-intent shoppers in a digitally native environment.

As search behaviour continues to evolve, AutoTrader is ensuring its listings are discoverable wherever consumers choose to begin their journey, including within AI-powered platforms. This strategic move further strengthens the company’s leadership position in South Africa’s automotive sector and underscores its commitment to shaping the future of vehicle discovery.

This latest development also aligns with the wider AI momentum across the Naspers, Prosus and the OLX Group, which recently announced the launch of AutoGPT in Europe as part of its broader investment in AI-powered marketplace experiences. In South Africa, AutoTrader’s ChatGPT integration demonstrates how these innovations are being brought to life in ways that are relevant to local consumers and dealers.
