The South African National Dance Trust (SANDT) is delighted to announce that the official opening of the premiere of a SPARTACUS of Africa is 30 May 2015. It will open at the Joburg Theatre and will then be performed at The Artscape Opera House in Cape Town and The Playhouse Theatre in Durban. All performances will be accompanied by full orchestra.
A SPARTACUS of Africa is renowned South African choreographer, Veronica Paeper’s ballet, SPARTACUS, which she has re-choreographed and which now includes classical and contemporary ballet. She will be assisted by Dutch based, South African choreographer, David Krugel.
“We are mounting a grand-scale production which will include international guest artists, South African professional dancers as well as student dancers from training organisations from throughout South Africa,” said Paeper.
Audtions will be held by Paeper in Johannesburg for professional classical and contemporary dancers on Monday 18 August 2014. Please be at the National School of the Arts at 17.30 promptly to register so that auditions can begin at 18.00. If you are a classical dancer please bring point shoes. A SPARTACUS of Africa is a dream that Veronica Paeper has had for a long time, and now, through secure funding from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, the National Arts Council and some cultural trusts and donors, the South African National Dance Trust has been able to secure this mammoth project to realise this dream.
“It is a story that we believe resonates here in South Africa and I have grounded the new production in Africa – a SPARTACUS of Africa,” Paeper said.
