In the early hours of 20 November 2014, Ulundi Tactical Response Team members conducted an operation at Nongoma area. Whilst patrolling around the area they received information about two suspects who were in possession of firearms at Msibini area. Members proceeded to the first homestead where they found a 21-year-old male and requested permission to search his house. Upon searching an unloaded 9mm pistol with a serial number filed off was found. He was then placed under arrest and charged for possession of unlicensed firearm.
Members proceeded to the second homestead where they found a 23-year-old male. They search his rondavel house and found a .38 revolver with eight live rounds of ammunition. Members requested a firearm license upon which he failed to produce. He was also arrested and charged for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Both suspects appeared in the Nongoma Magistrates’ Court on 20 November 2014. The recovered firearms will be sent to ballistic to determine if they were used in the commission of any crime in the country.
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded the Ulundi Tactical Response Team for the good work that led to the arrest of the suspects and seizure of unlicensed firearms. During this festive season, one of our focus areas is to raid illegal firearms from the criminals and arrest those found in possession of such illegal firearms and ammunition. ‘We appeal to the community to continue with their support in the fight against crime by providing valuable information to the police about illegal firearms in their areas. These firearms might be used to kill one of your beloved family members, friends or colleagues and we need to stand up now to prevent such by reporting those in possession of such firearms,’ she said.
