The eThekwini Mayor Cllr Mxolisi Kaunda condemns the torching of four municipal vehicles that were parked at Intuthuko Junction, in Cato Manor, in the early hours of this morning. The incident comes just after several state vehicles were also set alight in a Sizakala Centre in Lamontville recently.
“We are concerned about this criminal behaviour of some members of the public. It is worrying because this unlawful conduct is not relenting. This is tax payers’ money and resources that are supposed to assist us in speeding up service delivery. We therefore appeal to the police to leave no stone unturned and arrest those responsible for this crime. We also urge members of the community not to be silent when incidents of this nature happen in their communities. They need to isolate these individuals by working unwaveringly with the police” said Kaunda
Yesterday, the city’s Land Invasion Unit had an operation in the area to prevent land grabs and members came under attack.
“The unit came face to face with land invaders in the area which resulted to one of city’s vehicles being stoned while other members sustained injuries. Investigation is underway to establish whether this operation could be the reason for the city’s property to be destroyed. “We cannot tolerate lawlessness and it is our responsibility to act wherever it rears its ugly head because this is a country governed by the rule of law” said Kaunda.
