Governments across the globe are juggling the prevention of mass medical system overload and citizen mortality through lockdown strategies with the negative impact thereof on economic sustainability and growth. Whilst some business functions can be shifted online, physical human engagement still remains critical for most industries to function and communities to survive. As a result, there has been an increased international focus on solutions that allow for human contact whilst limiting the spread of the Coronavirus.
A combination of social distancing, hand sanitising, rigorous testing, contact tracing, quarantine of potentially infected persons and universal wearing of masks in public is considered the road forward in allowing some resumption of working and living functions whilst continuing to attempt to flatten the curve of the epidemic.
The primary transmission of coronavirus is known to be droplet-based ejected from the mouth through speaking, sneezing and coughing, contaminating surfaces or those in the direct vicinity. Infectiousness is particularly high in the first seven days after infection when people are largely asymptomatic, however, can be up to 14 days. Furthermore, studies indicate that up to 80% of people testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 may be asymptomatic, meaning they are infectious without perhaps even realising it. A mask over the face assists in creating a barrier to contain the infectious droplets, as well as helps wearers to avoid touching their faces to help reduce the spread of the virus.
Face mask-wearing has long been the norm in many Asian countries. However, In European countries, such as Austria, mask-wearing in shops has now been made compulsory; and in the United States, people are being encouraged and in some cases mandated to cover their faces in public during the current health crisis. With the supply of N95 and medical-grade surgical masks in short supply, The World Health Organisation has issued a warning to save these critically needed masks for health care workers working hands-on with COVID-19 crisis. People are, therefore, turning to homemade masks to protect themselves when venturing out for grocery shopping and essential chores; or working “essential” roles outside of the medical field.
In order to contribute to increased public accessibility to face masks, Cape Town based companies, Complete Print and Paarl Marketing, working closely with their pressure sensitive label supplier, Lebone Paarl Labels, have developed an innovative range of alternative, affordable masks using modern HP Indigo digital printing and Abg Digicon finishing technology. The unique mask shape provides full coverage across the face for both the nose and mouth with ear slits to accommodate different head sizes.
A single-use barrier mask is manufactured from Sappi 90gsm one side coated paper, which is internationally certified for direct food contact. The outer side is laminated with a 23 Micron clear gloss (or matt) film with low moisture vapor transmission to increase mask durability and to add a moisture barrier to contain droplet spread. Large volumes of this cost-effective option can be delivered in plain white or printed with corporate branding and designs, with once-off usage perfect for distribution at retail and business entrances as well as on transport networks such as taxis, trains, buses and flights to help keep customers, colleagues and staff safe.
A reusable face mask option is manufactured inline using DuPont
Tyvek®. This substrate combines the performance of paper, film and fabric with pure high-density polyethylene fibres randomly laid, providing better filtration than woven fabric and good air permeability to allow for comfortable breathing. This mask is water-resistant against droplet exposure, durable and washable allowing for reuse. It is 100% recyclable, therefore, reducing the accumulation environmental waste of disposed personal protection equipment (PPE).
In addition to face masks, the technology further allows for the production of full-face shields, die-cut inline from clear, flexible film. These provide barrier protection to the facial area including eyes, nose and lips from droplet transmission from speaking, sneezing or coughing without obscuring vision, an ideal product to keep staff safe and protect customers especially in the food and healthcare delivery chains.
In addition to ISO 9001 international quality certification, Lebone Paarl Labels is FSSC 22000 (Foundation Food Safety System Certification 22000) certified, confirming that the food safety management system is compliant for food, healthcare and pharmaceutical products.
This initiative represents a viable means through which the public can assist in flattening the curve while simultaneously preserving medical masks for those on the front lines.
