The IFP member of the Executive in eThekwini Municipality, Cllr Mdu Nkosi has express grave concern over the recent reports of the discovery of medical waste on the beach in the vicinity of the Storm water outlet in front of Addington Hospital.
“Samples of the waste contained: syringes, packs of tablets for heart treatment and needles, which is a very severe case of negligence and ‘life threatening pollution’, as people strolling on the beach or bathers are at risk of being infected with the discarded syringes or needles found on the beach. This is unhygienic as for the result our resident especially the children who visit the beach their life are at risk of consuming the tablets that are still in packs and resemble sweets,” continued Cllr Nkosi.
“The eThekwini Municipality must be held responsible for the lack of DSW which is accountable for collecting the waste within the municipality. We also calls on the Hospital itself to ensure that used waste product are incinerated. Health and waste disposals must clean up this mess and not just block off or divert the Storm water drains to less noticeable areas,” concluded Cllr Nkosi.
