Put your hand up if you ran around as a child with a gnarled semi-straight stick of wood pointing at things and invoking the abracadabra invocation before mounting a brrom and whosshing off to fantasies imagined?

These days abracadabra is just a fun word said by magicians as they do a trick, but as far back as the 17th century it was much more serious – a magic word that was supposed to be a charm against fever and was often engraved on an amulet worn around the neck.

Abracadabra was written so that if formed a triangle, beginning with ‘A’ on the first line, ‘AB’ on the second, and so on.

It ultimately goes back to ancient times, first recorded in a Latin poem of the 2nd century AD, See also PRESTO.

Why is abracadabra used as a magic symbol? It was used as a magical formula by the Gnostics of the sect of Basilides in invoking the aid of beneficent spirits against disease and misfortune. It is found on Abraxas stones, which were worn as amulets.

What is the original meaning of abracadabra? “I will create as I speak” – from the Aramaic phrase avra kehdabra, meaning “I will create as I speak”. The source is three Hebrew words, ab (father), ben (son), and ruach acadosch (holy spirit).

What does the abracadabra spell do? It is an ancient spell in Aramaic, and it is the original of abracadabra, which means ‘let the thing be destroyed. ‘ Originally, it was used to cure illness and the ‘thing’ was the illness, but I decided to make it the ‘thing’ as in the person standing in front of me.

Where did abracadabra originate? Abracadabra began its life as a healing spell. It’s been traced as far back as the third century CE, when physician Quintus Serenus Sammonicus (better known as Serenus) wrote the treatise Liber Medicinalis.

Is abracadabra really Hebrew? Abracadabra belongs to Aramaic, a Semitic language that shares many of the same grammar rules as Hebrew, says Cohen in Win the Crowd.
