A successful clean-up with #CleanBlueLagoon!:
Park Boulevard Centre, in association with #CleanBlueLagoon, recently hosted their 4th beach clean-up on Saturday, January 18th which commenced from 8am and finished just before lunchtime.
#CleanBlueLagoon is a group dedicated to cleaning up and maintaining not only the Blue Lagoon and Beachgrove Mangrove areas, but also numerous areas around Durban where litter is prevalent.
This particular group and their ongoing clean-up campaign receive donations from the Park Boulevard Shopping Centre as well as other like-minded sponsors, which is then allocated to providing a wage to unemployed individuals who assist in these cleaning operations.
#CleanBlueLagoon’s Dale Johnson said, “What could be a little piece of paradise within the City of Durban, the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve serves more as a dumping ground than a nature reserve these days, which is a truly sad tale as to how we as humans respect our planet and neighbourhoods!
What is important to note, is that there are three species of protected mangrove trees which are found here, that of the black, red, and white mangrove trees. The reserve is also home to a number of animal species, including mudskippers, fiddler crabs and the mangrove kingfisher which are very important to our eco system”. He also added that “we do not dump litter in our front yards, so don’t treat this beautiful haven as such.”
