A Helping Hand

14 July 2015 by Alan

This Mandela Day, the KZN Science Centre, a non-profit organisation, will be heading to the Abalindi Children’s Home in Inanda to donate their time and items of clothing collected via social media, participating in an interactive and edutainment science show and provide meals.

Manager of Education Services for The KZN Science Centre, Ms Nazley Giquel, said that, for her, one of Madiba’s most inspiring quotes was: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

“We believe that we owe it to our children to provide them with the tools and knowledge needed to get an education that will enable them to break out of the cycle of poverty,” she said, pointing out that the KZN Science Centre’s goal would always be to improve the quality of education for children in disadvantaged communities and to up the performance of the province’s learners in critical disciplines such as science, mathematics, technology and engineering. .

The Abalindi Children’s Home is an NPO that includes a residential facility caring for children, youth and young adults from 3 to 19 years of age. They provide support for orphans as well as other vulnerable children ensuring that they have shelter, clothing, and food and that their basic needs are met. They accommodate just over 40 children that have been legally placed in their care by the government.
