EThekwini Municipality is reinforcing its commitment to strengthen community safety with the deployment of 39 newly trained firefighters, boosting the City’s capacity to respond faster and more effectively to emergencies.
Arriving at a critical time as winter conditions heighten the risk of fires, particularly in vulnerable communities, the new recruits will play a vital role in intensifying the City’s emergency response and ensuring no call for help goes unanswered.
The firefighters have successfully completed rigorous, hands-on training in structural firefighting, hazardous materials handling, emergency medical response, and physical endurance, preparing them to act decisively in high-pressure situations where lives are at stake.
The group, which includes 10 women and 29 men, represents a new generation of skilled and dedicated professionals ready to serve on the frontlines.
Their deployment across fire stations will significantly improve response times, strengthen coordination, and enhance the efficiency of emergency services across the Municipality.
eThekwini Municipality Deputy Mayor, Councillor Zandile Myeni, welcomed the new intake underscoring the responsibility they carry.
“You are stepping into a calling that demands courage, sacrifice and unwavering commitment. In the face of danger, you will be the hope that people cling to, “she said.
She encouraged the new firefighters to serve with bravery, act with urgency, and never forget the lives that depend on them.
“You are not just responding to fires. You are protecting lives, restoring dignity, and standing as a shield for our communities in their most vulnerable moments,” said Deputy Mayor Myeni.
The City continues to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of its residents, especially in high-risk areas where fire incidents remain a serious concern.
This investment in skilled personnel reflects eThekwini’s ongoing commitment to strengthening disaster preparedness and delivering responsive, people-centred services.
For firefighter Nosipho Kunene, a new recruit helping to break barriers in a traditionally male-dominated field, joining the service is both a personal triumph and an opportunity to make a meaningful impact. She expressed gratitude to the Municipality for the opportunity.
“I am proud to stand in a space where women are proving that courage has no gender. I am ready to serve, protect, and save lives without fear,” she said.
With boots on the ground, the City is better equipped than ever to protect communities, respond to emergencies, and build a safer, more resilient eThekwini for all.
