With the 150th birthday celebrations well underway, Durban High School recently held their annual Junior Speech Day awards ceremony for grade 8 to 11 academic achievements in 2015. The guest speaker of the day was Mr Athabile Jojo, an old boy (Class of 2003) and the first head boy of colour to be appointed at the school. Jojo addressed the school, parents and staff and presented an encouraging speech that highlighted the fact that every boy should make the most of their opportunity at DHS and try their best in all that they do.
Jojo, who is a business owner and Deputy President of the South African Youth Chamber Commerce and Industry (Eastern Cape), made the most of his time while at Durban High School, and was not only the Head Prefect of the school in 2003, but was also the Head Prefect of Blackmore House in the same year – as is the current DHS Head Prefect of 2016, Mvumeleni Mathenjwa. Whilst at DHS, Jojo also had a promising rugby career and was also involved in Football and the Representative Council of Learners (RCL).
Invited to present the awards, Jojo expressed his pride at being a part of the day’s awards which were presented per grade in the following categories: Certificates of Merit for aggregates in excess of 80%, Subject Prizes as well as Grade prizes.
The main awards were presented to those who placed in the top three places in the grade in 2015:
- Grade 8 – Thirushan Pather (1st), Mohammed Shaikjee (2nd) and Sibusiso Mpanza (3rd)
- Grade 9 – Mahil Dessai (1st), Neeven Naidoo (2nd) and Anas Moola (3rd)
- Grade 10 – Avuyile Madiba (1st) , Ashvir Debba (2nd) and Muhummad Moosa (3rd)
- Grade 11 – Joshua Spooner (1st), Hassen Moorad (2nd), Muhammad Randeree (3rd)
Durban High School congratulates all the prize winners for their efforts and thanks Mr Jojo for taking the time out to be a part of this annual school ceremony.
