16 Families Receive New Homes In Thornwood

7 May 2026 by My Durban

There were tears of joy in Ward 14, Thornwood, as 16 families received keys to their new homes today, marking a significant milestone in the Municipality’s ongoing housing delivery programme.

The Chairperson of the Human Settlements, Engineering and Transport Committee, Councillor Themba Mvubu, led the handover alongside Deputy Chairperson, Councillor Sifiso Mkhize and Ward Councillor Mthokozisi Gasa.

The occasion brought relief and dignity to families who have endured years of inadequate living conditions.

The beneficiaries received their homes through the R293 Housing Project, a major municipal initiative aimed at rebuilding and upgrading houses constructed before 1994 in former township areas.

The project represents a substantial investment by the Municipality and will deliver a total of 700 housing units in Ward 14, upon completion.

Councillor Mvubu explained that the programme focuses on rectifying unsafe structures and upgrading them to meet current building standards.

“We are encouraged by the steady progress in Ward 14. As each unit is completed, it is immediately handed over to beneficiaries. We cannot delay relief for residents who have waited for so long,” he said.

Many of the beneficiaries previously lived in overcrowded and unsafe conditions, with some families of up to nine people sharing a single room.

One of the recipients, 32-year-old Andile Ngcobo, described the handover as a life-changing moment for her family.

“I cannot fully express how much this day means to us. We have waited for this opportunity for many years.

Living in one room with nine siblings was very difficult, but we never lost hope. Today, we are grateful that the Municipality has honoured its commitment,” she said.
