With the sunny, summer skies and beaches open and ready to welcome visitors, the KZN South Coast is #SummerReady! And for those looking for great nightlife, sporting adventures, and a bit of relaxation, then it’s time to head to the region’s ‘Fun Capital’, Margate.

“With summer approaching, many are finalizing their holiday plans and we’re already seeing lots of interest along the KZN South Coast, particularly as all our beaches are open with six retaining Blue Flag Status and another five gaining pilot Blue Flag status,” Phelisa Mangcu, CEO of South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise (SCTIE). “One of our top holiday destinations is the coastal town of Margate, and for those who haven’t visited before, here are 10 reasons why you should!”

1. Fishing
Those who think there’s nothing better than a holiday spent at the seaside, casting a line and waiting for the big catch will love the fishing off Margate Pier. Local anglers will share great tips on the best way to catch shad, kob and Garrick off this pier.

2. Accommodation
No matter the holiday budget, Margate is able to accommodate visitors in great seaside accommodation. There’s everything from seaside caravan parks and self-catering accommodation, to guest houses, B&Bs and top-level hotels. A room for every guest!

3. MICE
Margate Hotel is the ultimate MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Events) destination for business tourists. It’s more than just a beautiful venue, Margate Hotel caters to all conferencing requirements, from small groups of up to 250 delegates, with a professional team on hand to co-ordinate any event.

4. Shopping and Nightlife
Stop by Hibiscus Mall for a fantastic, one-stop-shop experience before heading out on the town for a bite to eat and some dancing at the many great restaurants and bars. Some of the popular eateries found in Margate include Aura Restaurant, Level 10, The Grove, Zuri Beach Restaurant and Senzi’s on Faya Shisanyama.

5. Golf
The KZN South Coast is also known as ‘The Golf Coast’ for the 11 top courses found in this region – one of which is Margate Country Club! The course caters to golfers of all abilities with great clubhouse facilities for a family-friendly adventure.

6. Culture
For visitors who enjoy indulging in a bit of art and culture, then Margate Museum and Sebenza Village are great stops. This beautiful coastal town has a vibrant art scene with great handmade arts and crafts on sale.

7. Hiking and running trails
Get the heart rate up in Margate’s River Valley Nature Reserve, a 28-hectare reserve with expansive walking trails within the riverine forest. Enjoy a hike or run out here while trying to spot some of the beautiful local birds and wildlife.

8. Great people
The Margate community is always ready to welcome visitors to this friendly town, and they work hard to ensure it’s clean, safe and inviting. The Tidy Towns project is by the community, for the community, keeping this beautiful spot immaculate.

9. Accessibility
Margate Airport is about to be re-launched following an R11-million refurbishment, making this a much more accessible venue for tourists. The renovation included an infrastructure upgrade and extension of the terminal building, the restrooms, parking areas and the commercial precinct.

10. Relaxation
Finally, Margate is the ideal spot for simply unwinding! The Blue Flag Lucien Beach on the northern side of Margate is a great place for bathing, snorkelling and surfing. Visitors can also relax while enjoying a fantastic Rickshaw Ride at Margate Beach, while Margate’s Whale Deck is a great spot for viewing the migrating humpbacks.
