10 Bathroom Water Saving Tips

2 September 2024 by My Durban

The bathroom is one of the most water-intensive rooms in the house, but there are many simple changes you can make to significantly reduce your water usage.

Here are some effective tips to help you save water in the bathroom:

  1. Fix leaks: Check your taps, toilets, and showerheads for leaks and fix them promptly. You can use food coloring in your toilet bowl without flushing. If the colour begins to clear out, you have a leak that needs to be fixed immediately.
  2. Turn off the tap: Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth, washing your hands, or rinsing your face.
  3. Take shorter showers: Avoiding taking long hot steamy showers which waste eighteen to thirty six litres of water. Limit your showering time by one to two minutes which can save up to eighteen litres of water per day. Be mindful to install a shower timer or low-flow showerheads with a built-in timer.
  4. Install low-flow fixtures: Replace old showerheads with low-flow models (2.5 gallons per minute or less) and install low-flow taps.
  5. Collect water for flushing: Collect water for flushing from sinks, showers, or rainwater harvest systems to flush the toilets.
  6. Choose water-efficient appliances: When replacing bathroom appliances, look for water-efficient models with the Water Sense label.
  7. Monitor your water usage: Check your water meter regularly to detect hidden leaks or water-wasting habits.
  8. Use a showerhead with a Shut-off valve: Install a showerhead with a built-in shut-off valve, allowing you to turn off the water while soaping up or shampooing.
  9. Use a water-efficient toilet: If you are due for a toilet upgrade, consider a dual-flush or low model.
  10. Stop using toilets as an ashtray: Toilets are not meant to flash cigarette butt because every time you flush a cigarette butt you waste eighteen to twenty five litres of water.

By implementing these simple changes, you will significantly reduce your bathroom’s water consumption, contributing to a more sustainable future.
