Titans triumph over Dolphins in Durban:

Durban – A Heino Kuhn hundred helped the Multiply Titans to a 70 run win over the Hollywoodbets Dolphins in their Momentum One Day Cup showdown at Kingsmead Cricket Stadium on Friday evening.

Batting first the Titans lost their first wicket with the score on 11 when Diego Rosier was well caught by Vaughn van Jaarsveld for four off the bowling of Eathan Bosch.

Heino Kuhn was dropped when he was on four at slip and the experienced batsman made the Dolphins pay for the drop as he went on to score 107 off 98 balls.

Early on the Titans threatened to score well over 300 with Kuhn and opener Jonathan Vandiar going well and the pair put on 79 for the second wicket before Vandiar was caught trying to sweep spinner Prenelan Subrayen for 34.

Kuhn and Dean Elgar combined for 70 runs in 11 overs and continued to tick the score over but it was Senuran Muthusamy who broke the stand when Elgar chipped one to Ackerman at cover for 26.

40 runs later when the score was on 200 Kuhn’s innings came to an end with 11 fours and a six. The total was 200 for four and Muthusamy had his second wicket.

Okuhle Cele was the next bowler to get in the wickets column when he got the dangerous Heinrich Klaasen for 51. At that stage the score was 260 for five in the 44th over and the Titans would have been hoping to go well beyond 300.

A strong comeback from the Dolphins saw them take four wickets for 40 runs in the final six overs as the Titans ended on 300 for nine in their 50 overs.

Muthusamy was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up three for 55 in his 10 overs while Cele took two for 49 in eight overs.

Subrayen, Keshav Maharaj and Eathan Bosch all picked up one wicket each.

The chase started solidly for the Dolphins with openers Sarel Erwee and Vaughn van Jaarsveld taking the Dolphins past 50 at just over a run a ball before Erwee fell for 29, caught off Junior Dala.

Dala continued his good form when he had debutant Marques Ackerman and Dane Vilas both caught behind in consecutive deliveries. The Dolphins were 71 for three in the 16th over of their innings.

In the 21st over Van Jaarsveld fell for a well-played 52 off 59 balls with hit six fours in his knock.

Senuran Muthusamy and Sibonelo Makhanya worked hard to piece the innings back together and put on a partnership of 26 before the former was dismissed for 13.

Keshav Maharaj made 11 in a stand of 20 before he became Dala’s fifth victim with the total on 141 for six.

Makhanya and Eathan Bosch, both playing in their first games of the campaign, batted well together as they added fifty runs in just 45 balls.

Unfortunately for the hosts Bosch fell soon after they went to that 50 partnership, bowled by Tshepo Moreki for 27 off 24 balls.

Makhanya’s valiant innings came to an end when he was well caught in the deep for 55 off 66 balls with two fours and three sixes.

Kerwin Mungroo tried to support Subrayen at the back end and was LBW to Elgar for five in a partnership of 20.

Subrayen was the final wicket to fall for 22 and the Dolphins were bowled out for 230 in the 49th over.

Talking after the game coach Grant Morgan was happy with how the side came back with the ball considering the start that the Titans got but wanted more from the batting unit.

“There were positives in our response with the ball and we knew 300 was a good score but we didn’t think that it was unattainable.

“With that bat we just didn’t put together the partnerships that were needed.

“We probably transferred the pressure back on to them at the back end of our bowling and during our opening partnership, but we needed that really big partnership and it didn’t happen.”

The Dolphins travel to Kimberley where they will face the VKB Knights on Sunday.
