Kingsmead enjoys exciting international season – Featured Durban Blog

Kingsmead enjoys exciting international season:

With the ICC Cricket World Cup just a few months away, white ball cricket fever has gripped the nation and this fever definitely impacted on the Kingsmead Cricket Stadium that enjoyed festive crowds for the internationals against Pakistan and Sri Lanka this summer.

The iconic Durban stadium hosted two limited overs internationals and a test match with a One Day International against Pakistan in January and then more recently a test match and an ODI against Sri Lanka.

“We are really happy with the attendance figures that we got at the two limited overs games that we hosted at Kingsmead this summer,” CEO of KZN Cricket Heinrich Strydom said.

“With the Pakistan fixture falling on a Tuesday we were encouraged by the number of people that came through to watch an incredibly exciting game of cricket.

“I think the interest in limited overs cricket has definitely increased with the World Cup approaching.”

The two one day games that were hosted by Kingsmead, attracted just over 12 000 and 10 900 spectators for the Pakistan and Sri Lanka matches respectively.

The Proteas came out victorious on both occasions, with the ODI against Pakistan producing high drama with local boy Andile Phehlukwayo helping his team get home with the bat.

The Sri Lanka match saw the Proteas pile on 321 runs and reaffirmed the quality pitches and outfield that have been consistently produced by the KZNCU stadium staff.

The test match against Sri Lanka was another exciting game with the visitors winning in the end by one wicket in a memorable last wicket stand.

All the pitches prepared for the international matches received very positive ratings from the ICC.

“Looking back on the two ODI’s it is clear to see that the cricket loving public of Durban and the surrounding areas is keen to see as much international cricket as they can,” Strydom added.

“The consistent positive attendance numbers at Kingsmead play a massive role when international fixtures are allocated and I believe that Kingsmead will reap the rewards thereof.”

Strydom added that the KZN Cricket Union is very grateful for all the support received by the public and will embark on various exciting initiatives during the off-season.
