Erwee ton keeps Dolphins at MODC summit:

Pietermaritzburg – A measured 101 not out from Sarel Erwee helped guide the Hollywoodbets Dolphins to a seven wicket win over the Warriors in their Momentum One Day Cup match at the Pietermaritzburg Oval on Sunday.

Erwee’s knock took 128 balls and included fourteen fours and a single six and his knock helped solidify the Dolphins’ spot at the top of the One Day Cup log.

After being asked to bowl first the Dolphins made a good start when they picked up the wicket of Warriors captain Eddie Moore in the second over of the match with the score on six.

From there the Warriors took the momentum as Matthew Breetske and Sinethemba Qeshile put together an important partnership of 72 for the second wicket before Breetske was dismissed for 35.

Yaseen Vallie came and went for ten and then Qeshile went to a fifth List-A half century before he was caught and bowled by Prenelan Subrayen for a well-played eighty.

Qeshile and Lesiba Ngoepe threatened to take the Warriors to a total over 280 and towards 300, however good bowling from the Dolphins pinned the Warriors charge.

They put on 66 for the fourth wicket before Qeshile was dismissed.

Ngoepe fought hard to get the Warriors to a respectable score as he lost Onke Nyaku, Marco Marais and Sisanda Magala before he was caught by Sibz Makhanya off the bowling of Rob Frylinck for 53 off 71 balls.

Keshav Maharaj once again showed his good form with the ball when he took two for 28 in ten overs while Daryn Dupavillon and Okuhle Cele both bagged two wickets each as the Dolphins restricted the Warriors to 237 for nine.

In reply the Dolphins got off to the best possible start as Sarel Erwee and Grant Roelofsen put together a measured partnership that yielded 137 runs for the first wicket.

Roelofsen’s purple patch continued as he made his third half century of the competition, to go with one hundred, before he was out LBW to Vallie for 79 off 77 balls.

Marques Ackerman chipped in with eleven batting at three and at the loss of his wicket the Dolphins were 150 for two in the 31st over.

The Dolphins lost the wicket of Senuran Muthusamy for nine but that would be their last wicket as Erwee and Khaya Zondo steered the ship home with four overs to spare.

Their partnership of 71 prevented any jitters towards the end of the innings as Erwee popped one over the top for four to win the game and go to his fourth List-A century.

It was a satisfying result on a number of levels for the left-hander.

“It’s great that we have now solidified our spot on the top of the log,” Erwee said. “To get a hundred is always fantastic but I think it was a great team effort.

“Hats off to our bowlers because it came on nicely with the new ball but we managed to pull it back nicely at the end.

“The confidence in the camp is really good at the moment and we want to carry on this momentum going forward.”

The Dolphins now face the Momentum Multiply Titans at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium on Thursday 27 February.
