Daniel calls time on his rugby career:

After more than a decade in a black and white jersey, Cell C Sharks stalwart Keegan Daniel will call time on his illustrious rugby career at the end of this year’s Vodacom Super Rugby tournament.

One of the few Cell C Sharks players to have had the proud honour of playing 100 games for one franchise in both Vodacom Super Rugby and Currie Cup, this Springbok capped player is regarded as a someone who always boxed well above his weight and who wore his heart on his sleeve. His leadership credentials are unquestionable and amongst his many cherished memories, perhaps his defining moment as a leader was when he led The Cell C Sharks Currie Cup team to glory against Western Province in Cape Town.

Commenting on Keegan’s career, The Sharks CEO Gary Teichmann said: “He has given his heart and soul to this brand and he can be proud of what he has achieved over the years. His massive contribution both as a leader and mentor to the young players is commendable and will always be remembered.

“He has been a tremendous ambassador both on and off the playing field and we thank him for his invaluable contribution, which we will look back on with fondness.”

Keegan added: “The decision to retire was not an easy one to make, but after much consideration, I believe that this is the right time for me to move on. This place has given me so much and I leave with some of the greatest memories made and friendships forged.

“I arrived in Durban as a youngster with a dream to play rugby on the highest stage and I have been blessed to have achieved some wonderful triumphs in my career. Thank you to every person who has impacted my life and who has contributed to my career. I bow out as a proud man!”

“Our best wishes are extended to Keegan and his wife Tania on this next chapter of life after rugby”, concluded Teichmann.

Wednesday Club Rugby Column:

The second round of the Fidelity ADT Premier Division played last Friday produced a few early season surprises in the 61 year old club rugby competition with the biggest upset the defeat of unquestionably the most successful club in the history of the competition, SA Home Loans Durban Collegians, going down 49-40 to new boys on the block Richards Bay.

The other upset result saw Bidvest Insurance Crusaders pick up a hard fought victory over their more favored visitors eThekwini Refractories Amanzimtoti edging out the South Coast Terriers 18-12 after leading 12-7 at the break.

Played in front of a huge crowd at their home grounds in Ranleigh Crescent Durban North it was a vastly improved Crusaders outfit that looked a lot hungrier than Amanzimtoti and certainly more determined to win their opening game of their 2018 campaign.

Although the whole squad of the victorious Crusaders side can take a bow it was fullback Spha Dube who stole the show scoring 13 of his sides winning 18 points with a try a conversion and two penalties. Hooker Damian May crossed for their other try. Amanzimtoti replied with tries from Marthinus Volker and wing Chad Fisher with flyhalf Daryn Numan slotting a conversion.

If anything Crusaders will take a lot of confidence out of this game as they prepare to face Durban Collegians on Friday evening

Durban Collegians on the other hand will be hurting having been surprisingly beaten by Richards Bay in a game that only saw them have the lead once in the game at the very beginning when they led 7-5. Leading 26-25 at half time Richards Bay went on to take the honors in what turned out to be a historical win for the Zululand club.

Coach Jacques Deen openly admitted that his side were their own worst enemy on the night and will no doubt will get them to lift themselves for their next encounter against Crusaders.

Next up for the side from The Bay, who are the early pacemakers on the log standings, will be their hosts the current Moor Cup holders College Rovers on Friday evening on KP 3 while Toti will travel to Varsity College who beat FNB UKZN Pietermaritzburg 44-0 crossing for a six try spree..

In the First Division Land Rover Durban Hillcrest were given a hard time only managing a 17-15 win against Durban Mets and will have to be on top of their game this weekend when they host South Coast Warriors. Ballito Dolphins beat Jaguars 43-17 and travel to Howard College to meet UKZN Dbn on Friday evening. In the remaining games Westville beat Zululand Rhinos 36-5 and South Coast Warriors beat Maritzburg Collegians 60-14.
