Morale Boosting Victory:

It may have been a difficult couple of weeks for the Cell C Sharks, but the Vodacom Super Rugby victory over the DHL Stormers at JONSSON KINGS PARK on Saturday certainly raised more than a few smiles.

Head coach Robert du Preez expressed his delight after the 24-17 win, saying, “We’re very happy with the win, I felt it was a great performance by the boys. As bad as last week was, this was outstanding.

The coach had spoken about the importance of a good start and how that built confidence and asserted pressure on the opposition. That hadn’t materialised in the match against the Vodacom Bulls, and while the first half of the clash with the DHL Stormers was a real arm-wrestle, it was the early try in the second half that achieved those exact objectives.

“I thought we were a little bit unlucky not to get points in the first 10 minutes of the game, but I think that early try after half time was the game-changer.

“I also felt that our defence was very good, I thought at stages we didn’t come off the line as much as I would have liked, showing a bit more line speed, but there were some fantastic dominant hits and that’s always a telling sign of a team’s commitment and attitude.

“To come back from a loss like that to the Vodacom Bulls and come out and put in a performance like this, I’m very happy. We know there were a couple of tries we left out there, but I felt the boys played really well.”

The loss against the Vodacom Bulls and the win over the DHL Stormers were like chalk and cheese, so what was the difference between the two matches?

“In hindsight, in the build-up to the Bulls game, we probably worked the boys too hard after a long, four week tour and it takes time to get back into the rhythm of South Africa with the time difference,” du Preez explained. “We made sure that the energy levels were right up there for this match and I think that’s why they played so well against the DHL Stormers.”

The coach also had a few thoughts on Thomas du Toit’s man of the match performance, the tighthead prop having a stand-out game in all facets, having scrummed with immense power and determination (and accuracy), running great support lines and throwing in an important try as well.

“I’ve always said that Thomas has incredible talent and it was all about perseverance,” the coach pointed out. “It would have been easy after one or two games that didn’t go well and then to move him back to loosehead. But he showed in this match that he has the potential to be the best tighthead in the world.

“It was just a great effort from the boys, that’s what was the pleasing thing for me. It was really tough out there, we played against a team that was also desperate to win. All in all, it was a good game of rugby.”

Although it was an outstanding, committed performance, the coach admitted that there are areas of improvement still to work on.

“I think we need to be more patient with ball in hand, there were a couple of times where we just looked for the offload in 50-50 situations. We’ll be a good team if we can put multiple phases together.”

This performance was the standard expected of the team. But we can’t go backwards now. We have to build on this.

The coach confirmed that Robert Junior, had been battling with his shoulder for a while. “Every now and then he gets a knock to it and it sets him back a bit, but he’s fine.

“Hopefully we’ll see Beast back for the Highlanders game after the bye. Having said that, I thought Juan Schoeman had an outstanding game.”
